When: Fri, 05/20/2022 to Wed, 11/30/2022

In celebration of Scotland’s Year of Stories, Edinburgh (United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), the first UNESCO Creative City of Literature designated in 2004, launches Figures of Speech, a series of cross-sectoral cultural events spanning from 20 May to 30 November 2022.

A testament to Scottish literary heritage, Edinburgh’s Figures of Speech will give audiences the opportunity to enjoy iconic classics as well as contemporary works and recent commissions, over the course of a six-event programme, featuring 12 writers and 6 multi-disciplinary artists. Each event will bring writers and artists together to discuss one of the six following themes – music, friendship, future, love, place and big ideas – while journeying through the local literary landscape, old and new.

Born out of an initial collaboration between the Creative City of Edinburgh and the Scottish Storytelling Centre, and funded by Visit Scotland, Figures of Speech serves as a pilot project for future partnerships, aimed at generating interest in literature among broad and diverse audiences. In addition to the 600 in person expected participants, the events will be recorded and made available online for international audiences.

By placing literature at the center of the municipality’s cultural life for a span of six months, through a diverse programming, Figures of Speech showcases how Creative Cities can leverage their creative assets to build sustainable cities, where culture is accessible to everyone notably by providing artists with a bigger platform, broadening their opportunities, and strengthening the production and dissemination of new work.
